Bara is frequently called such in English because of the influence of the magazine Barazoku (薔薇族, "Rose Tribe"). In Japanese, it is more commonly referred to as Men's Love or ML, as contrasted with BL, Boy's Love. It is primarily characterized by muscular, hyper-masculine men (in direct opposition to the androgyny of Yaoi characters, primarily written by females for a female audience).
